Women's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw With Iona

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with Iona on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Orono, Maine. Maine moves to 1-1-1 on the season with the tie, while Iona sees its record move to 1-3-1.
Maine was led by America East Player of the Game Carolyne Nellis (Quebec City, Quebec), who tallied her fourth goal of the season. Melissa Frederick, who tallied Iona's goal, was named the America East Player of the Game for the Gaels.
The two teams played through 30 scoreless minutes, before the Black Bears were able to find the back of the goal. With the ball in the box, it deflected off a Iona defender and back to Nellis who fired it past Gael keeper Trista Rivera for her fourth goal of the season.
Iona tied the game at 65:58. Sofia Sanchez began the play with a corner kick. She found Frederick in the box who headed the ball past Maine keeper Meagan Price-Leibdenzeder, for her second goal of the season.
The game stayed 1-1 the remainder of regulation and through two 10-minute overtime periods. Maine held a 16-13 edge in shots in the game, including having the only three in the second overtime.
Price-Leibenzeder made six saves in goal for the Black Bears. She moves to 1-1-1 on the season. Rivera stopped 10 shots in goal for the Gaels. She also moves to 1-1-1 on the season.
Maine returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 6 when it travesl to Holy Cross for a 4 PM tilt.
