Flynn, Sullivan Lead Maine Past UMass Lowell 4-0

LOWELL, Mass. -- Brian Flynn (Lynnfield, Mass.) had a pair of third period goals and Dan Sullivan (York, Pa.) recorded his first career shutout to lead the University of Maine men's ice hockey team past UMass Lowell 4-0 on Friday night at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass. Maine improves to 13-10-6 on the season and 10-8-4 in Hockey East play. Maine also got a goal and an assist from Matt Mangene (Manorville, N.Y.) and Jeff Dimmen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in the game.
Despite having a couple of early scoring chances, the Black Bears went into the first intermission scoreless with UMass Lowell. Maine had a 14-5 edge in shots in goal in the first frame.
Maine got on the scoreboard just 2:15 into the second period. Mike Banwell (Scarborough, Ontario) had a shot from the blueline that Matt Mangene tipped by UML goalie Marc Boulanger. Boulanger got a piece of the puck, but not enough as it trickled across the goal line. It was Mangene's second goal of the season, as he tallied the game-winner against Cornell in the 2010 Florida College Classic. Joey Diamond (Long Beach, N.Y.) also assisted on the goal.
The Black Bears added to their lead at 15:16 of the second period. Jeff Dimmen received a pass from Kyle Beattie (Avondale, Ariz.) in the right face-off circle and ripped a shot past Boulanger that just snuck under the crossbar. The goal, which came on the power play, was also assisted by Robby Dee (Plymouth, Minn.)
The Black Bears had a 30-10 edge in shots on goal after two periods of action.
Brian Flynn extended Maine's lead to 3-0 at 8:16 of the third period when he received a pass from Mangene just outside the crease and roofed the puck past Boulanger. Jon Swavely (Reading, Pa.) also assisted on the goal for the Black Bears.
Flynn scored his second of the period at 14:24 when he received a pass in the slot and one-timed the puck past Boulanger. For Flynn, it was his team-leading 16th goal of the season. Dimmen assisted on the goal for the Black Bears.
Maine goalie Dan Sullivan (York, Pa.) made 21 saves in goal for the Black Bears. He improves to 6-5-1 on the season. Marc Boulanger stopped 40 shots for the River Hawks. He falls to 0-11-1.
Maine finished the game with a 44-21 edge in shots on goal. The Black Bears were 1-for-4 on the power play, while UMass Lowell was 0-for-5.
UMass Lowell falls to 4-23-2 on the season and 3-19-0 on the season.
The two teams return to action on Saturday, Feb. 19 at Tsongas Arena in Lowell. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 PM and the game will be televised on NESN.
