Men's Basketball Falls to Vermont

ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to Vermont by the score of 73-57 on Wednesday night at the Alfond Arena. With the loss, Maine falls to 14-12 overall and 8-6 in America East play while Vermont improves to 22-5 and 13-2 in league play. Maine was led by America East Player of the Game Terrance Mitchell (Milton, Fla.) who had 13 points, two assists and two blocks.
The Catamounts took a 4-0 lead, before Murphy Burnatowski (Waterloo, Ontario) stole the ball and raved the length for the layup. The teams exchanged baskets, and with just over five minutes gone in the half, Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) got the ball down low for a nice drop step and layup.
Vermont would score the next three baskets to take a 16-10 lead with 11:54 left, but a Mitchell three from the corner cut the lead in half.
The Catamounts went on a run to expand the lead to 24-18, but Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) hit a three from the top of the arc to cut it to three with 7:51 left.
Vermont would once again take a six-point lead at 30-24, but Mitchell would block a Catamount jumper and get the ball back on the other end for a fastbreak three-pointer from the corner.
The Catamounts again came back, and had the ball with under three minutes remaining up 38-32, but Maine forced them into a shot clock violation.
A Fraser jumper would cut it to four, but the Catamounts would strike last to take a 40-34 lead into halftime.
Maine was led by Mitchell who had 13 points in the first half while Fraser added eight. Singleton had five assists to go with his five points.
The Black Bears shot 52 percent from the field while the Catamounts shot 58 percent. Vermont held the rebounding edge 19-7.
Vermont opened up the second half with hot-shooting to go on a run and take a 48-36 lead. The Black Bears cut the lead to 51-43 on a Troy Barnies (Auburn, Maine) free throw just over seven minutes into the half, but the Catamounts would continue their impressive shooting to pull ahead 65-49 with five minutes to go to seal the win.
Fraser finished with 13 points and four rebounds while Barnies had 16. Singleton finished with seven points and six assists.
Maine shot 41.7 percent from the game while Vermont shot 59.6 percent.
The Catamounts were led by America East Player of the Game Evan Fjeld who had 19 points and seven rebounds.
