Men's Basketball Falls in Overtime

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The University of Maine men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Stony Brook by the score of 71-69 on Saturday afternoon in Stony Brook, N.Y. With the loss, Maine is now 14-11 overall and 8-5 in America East play while Stony Brook goes to 11-14 and 6-7 in league play. Maine was led by America East Player of the Game Troy Barnies (Auburn, Maine) who had 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Maine opened up with a 7-0 lead courtesy of four points from Troy Barnies (Auburn, Maine) and a three-pointer from Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif.) After a Seawolves basket, McLemore hit a nice step-back jumper from the corner.
Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) would give Maine a 14-2 lead on a nice layup with a feed from McLemore. The Seawolves answered with a pair of buckets, but three straight free throws would give Maine a 17-7 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half.
The Seawolves cut the lead to 22-17 on a three-pointer with just under nine minutes to play, and would close it to a one-point game with 7:11 left. Stony Brook made a three to take the lead, but McLemore answered with one of his own.
The teams would trade baskets, and the Seawolves took a 34-33 lead into halftime.
Barnies led the way for Maine with 10 points and six rebounds while McLemore added 12 points. Maine shot 37 percent from the field in the first half while Stony Brook shot 45.2 percent.
In the second half, McLemore would give Maine a lead with a pair of free throws, but Stony Brook would answer, and take a 40-37 lead with 15:32 left.
The Seawolves expanded the lead to 44-37 with 14:17 left, but Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) would close the gap to 46-41 with 10:43 left, but Stony Brook would expand it to 51-41 with just under 10 minutes to play.
Maine responded as Singleton would beat his defender at the top of the arc before finding McLemore for an open three from the corner. Maine would keep up the pressure, and a Barnies layup and the foul would cut it to 54-51, before the Seawolves made a three.
McLemore would made a jumper and two Terrance Mitchell (Milton, Fla.) free throws made it a two-point game. Sean McNally (Gardiner, Maine) would tie the game as McLemore found him down low for the layup.
Stony Brook made a pair of free throws to take the lead with under two minutes left, but the Black Bears could not answer on their next possession.
On the ensuing Seawolves possession, the Black Bears forced a bar shot and Maine got the rebound before calling timeout.
Barnies would tie the game out of the timeout as he had a great up-and-under move for a layup. Maine would force Stony Brook into a long shot at the end and the game went into overtime.
The Seawolves made a three to start overtime, but McLemore would can two free throws to cut the lead to one.
The Seawolves would take a 66-61 lead before Mitchell canned two free throws. After Maine forced a turnover, McLemore sank two free throws to cut the lead to 66-65 with 1:38 left.
Stony Brook made a jumper to take a three point lead with 34 seconds left, and the Black Bears were called for an offensive foul. The Seawolves would make free throws to hold off Maine the rest of the way.
McLemore finished with 24 points while McNally had 14 points and six rebounds.
The Black Bears return to action on Wednesday when they host Vermont at 7:30 p.m.
