
Swimming & Diving Open Conference Play Against Boston University, Stony Brook

BOSTON, Mass. -- The University of Maine swimming and diving squads opened conference action on Saturday afternoon with dual meets against Boston University and Stony Brook. The women's team picked up a 156-146 win over Stony Brook but fell to the Terriers 187-108. On the men's side, the Black Bears lost 183-117 to Stony Brook and dropped the meet to Boston University 207-87.
On the women's side, for the second-straight day, Maine's 200 yard medley relay team had a strong showing as Emily Buczkowski (Woolwich, Maine), Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.), Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) and Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) placed second with a time of 1:49.88.
Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) led the way for Maine as she won the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:16.28 and was fourth in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:05.16. Harvey also had a strong showing as she had a pair of second place showings, finishing second in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:06.67) and the 200 yard breaststroke (2:26.71). Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario) led the way in the distance races, placing third in the 1000 yard freestyle at 10:52.78 and was fourth in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:17.72.
Dwyer paced Maine in the sprint races with a third place finish in the 50 yard free 24.84 and was fourth in the 100 freestyle at 54.50. Courtney Mellish (Barrie, Ontario) had a third place showing in the 200 yard IM at 2:19.77 while Smrcina placed fourth in the 100 yard fly at 59.25. Lauren Thornbrough also had a fourth place finish as she touched the wall at 2:12.18 in the 200 yard fly.
The women closed things out with a victory in the 200 yard freestyle relay as Harvey, Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass.), Dwyer and Buczkowski teamed up in the event, finishing with a time of 1:38.70.
On the diving boards Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) was second in the one meter at 226.45 and placed third in the three meter with a final score of 232.35.
On the men's side, Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.) paced the squad with a second place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke at 1:01.10 and a third place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke, with a time of 2:13.54. Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) had a strong showing in the distance events, placing second in the 1000 free (9:56.12) and was third in the 500 yard freestyle (4:52.90).
Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine) and Zach Hamer (Andover, Mass.) each had fourth place finishes as Mackeil was fourth in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:01.20 and Hamer touched the wall fourth in the 200 yard breaststroke at 2:17.55.
Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine), Caleb Hoffman (Waterville, Maine), Joey Quinn (Bangor, Maine) and Michael Capossela (Riverside, Conn.) combined for a second place finish in the 200 yard freestlye relay as Capossela finished the event at 1:29.63 for the Black Bears.
The women's team returns to action when they travel to the University of Vermont on Nov. 12 for a 12 p.m. meet while the men return to the pool on Dec. 2 when they take part in the URI Invitational beginning at 5 p.m.
