
Swimming and Diving Sweeps Bates

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine swimming and diving teams swept visiting Bates College on Saturday afternoon at Wallace Pool. The women defeated Bates 210-90 while the men picked up a 169-125 win. The team of Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.), Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass.), Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) and Emily Buczkowski (Woolwich, Maine) broke the school and pool record for the 200-yard freestyle relay with a new record time of 1:36.02, breaking the old school record mark of 1:36.64.
The Black Bears teamed up for 22 total first place victories on Saturday as Harvey paved the way for the women's team with a pair of wins. Harvey took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:07.41 while also winning the 200-yard breaststroke event at 2:30.56. Dwyer also picked up a pair of wins as she was first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.72) and touched the wall first in the 200-yard back at 2:12.05.
Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) also picked up two individual wins. Smrcina placed first in both the 200-yard fly (2:12.31) and the 100-yard fly (59.47). Carmen Linden rounded out the two-winning days for the women's team as she dominated the distance races, taking first in both the 1000-yard freestyle (10:57.41) and the 500-yard free (5:19.34).
Trodden won the 100-yard breaststroke at 2:30.56 and was second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.26 while Buczkowski won the 50-yard freestyle (25.02) and was second in the 100-yard free at 55.13. Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) picked up the final win on the swimming side for the women, taking first place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.27).
Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) once again dominated the diving events as she swept both the one meter (244.80) and the three meter (266.02) events.
The women also took first place in the 200-yard medley relay as Dwyer, Harvey, Smrcina and Buczkowski touched the wall in 1:51.05.
Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.) picked up two wins and a second place finish on the men's side. Landry won both the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard breaststroke with times of 1:01.00 and 2:13.83, respectively as he was second in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:03.50.
Yuri Chronobil (Rochester, N.Y.) won the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.81), was second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.41) and placed third in the 1000-yard freestyle at 10:35.10. Michael Capossela (Riverside, Conn.) won the 1000-yard free event with a time of 10:19.15 and was second in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:57.03. Andrew MacKeil (Biddeford, Maine) won the 200-yard backstroke at 2:01.26 and was second in the 100-yard backstroke (54.94) while Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine) took first place honors in the 50-yard free at 22.10.
Zachary Hamer (Andover, Mass.) took second place in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.61) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.43).
The men swept their relay events as MacKeil, Landry, Meehan and Daniel Duvall (Durham, N.H.) took first place in the 200-yard medley relay (1:38.89). Meehan, Chornobil, Joey Quinn (Bangor, Maine) and Robbie Bickford (Milford, Maine) placed first in the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 3:19.74.
The swimmin and diving teams return to action on Jan. 14, 2012 when it battles at Providence College at 11 a.m.
