Hockey Falls at Top-Ranked Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Boston College scored five goals in the first 30:14 of the game to build a lead it would not relinquish and defeat the University of Maine men's ice hockey team 5-1 on Friday night at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Maine evens its record to 3-3-1 on the season and falls to 3-2-0 in Hockey East play. The top-ranked Eagles improves to 8-1-0 on the season and 6-0-0 in conference play.
Boston College took a 1-0 lead with a short-handed goal at 11:33 of the first period. Bill Arnold tipped the puck ahead to Chris Kreider who broke in alone on Maine goalie Dan Sullivan (York, Pa.) and fired a shot from the slot. For Kreider it was his seventh goal of the season. Patch Alber also assisted on the goal.
The Eagles extended their lead to 2-0 less than two minutes later when Kevin Hayes beat Sullivan. The Eagles took the 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
BC extended its lead to 3-0 just 28 seconds into the second period. Sullivan went to the side to play the puck, but Kreider was able to get the puck to Arnold in front. Arnold deposited the puck into the wide-open goal.
Maine answered back just one minute later. Klas Leidermark (Gavle, Sweden) slid the puck to Jon Swavely (Reading, Pa.) who had his shot go just inside the right goal post. For Swavely, it was his first goal of the season.
Boston College countered when Pat Mullane found Steven Whitney. He had his shot from the circle beat Sullivan at 2:16.
Barry Almeida extended the lead to 5-1 at 10:14 when he beat Maine goalie Martin Ouellette (St.-Hippolyte, Quebec) with a shot just below the face-off circle. Whitney picked up an assist for the Eagles. Boston College took the 5-1 lead into the second intermission.
Sullivan made eight saves for the Black Bears in 22:16. He allowed four goals and falls to 2-1-1 on the season. He was replaced by Ouellette who made 17 saves in 37:44. He allowed one goal.
Boston College outshot Maine 27-21 in the game. The Black Bears finished 0-for-4 on the power play, while Boston College was 2-for-4.
The Black Bears return to action on Saturday, Nov. 5 when they travel to New Hampshire to face the Wildcats. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 PM for the Whittemore Center.
