Abbott Nets Two Goals, But Maine falls at New Hampshire 3-2

DURHAM, N.H. -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team fought back from a 3-0 deficit, but in the end could not get the equalizer as it fell to New Hampshire 3-2 on Saturday night at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. Maine falls to 3-4-1 on the season with the loss and 3-3-0 in Hockey East play. New Hampshire improves to 4-4-1 overall and 3-3-0 in conference play.
UNH took a 1-0 lead 3:13 into the first period. Kevin Goumas had the puck behind the goal. He found Jay Camper all alone in the slot and passed the puck to him. Camper slid the puck between Maine goalie Martin Ouellette's (St.-Hippolyte, Quebec) and the goal post.
New Hampshire added to its lead just 25 seconds into the second period when Dalton Speelman scored his second goal of the season. The Wildcats scored on the power play at 7:54 of the second period. Stevie Moses had a shot that Ouellette stopped, but was not able to control. The rebound lay in the crease and Nick Sorkin was able to tap in into the net.
Maine got on the board at 13:50 of the second period when Will O'Neill (Salem, Mass.) made a pass that Kyle Beattie (Avondale, Ariz.) deflected to Jon Swavely (Reading, Pa.). Swavely whacked the puck before Spencer Abbott (Hamilton, Ontario) finished the play.
Abbott pulled Maine to within one goal at 5:14 of the third period with his second goal of the game. He received a pass from Joey Diamond (Long Beach, N.Y.) and beat Di Girolamo with a wrist shot. Brian Flynn (Lynnfield, Mass.) also assisted on the goal.
Maine outshot New Hampshire 33-28 in the game. The Black Bears were scoreless in three power play chances, while New Hampshire was 1-3 with the advantage.
Maine goalie Ouellette stopped 25 shots in goal for the Black Bears. He falls to 1-3-0 on the season. Di Girolamo stopped 31 shots and improves to 4-3-0.
