Maine Picks Up 5-2 Victory Over Vermont

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine women's hockey team skated to a 5-2 victory over the University of Vermont this afternoon. With the win, the Black Bears' record improves to 8-5-4 overall and 3-3-1 in Hockey East action. The Catamounts now have an overall record of 2-9-4 and 2-6-0 in Hockey East play. Missy Denk (Poplar Grove, Ill.), Brianne Kilgour (Hamilton, Ontario), Danielle Ward (Lansing, Mich.), and Tori Pasquariello (Mississauga, Ontario) all found the back of the net for the Black Bears.
Missy Denk scored the first goal of the game and her sixth of the season to give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead at 17:46 in the first period. She was assisted by Kelly McDonald (Ancaster, Ontario) picked up her third assist of the season on the play. Denk's lone goal of the period ended the first in a 1-0 Maine lead.
Brianne Kilgour gave the Black Bears a 2-0 lead on a shorthanded goal just 1:48 into the second period, giving her a total of two goals on the season. Myriam Croussette (Baie-Comeau, Quebec) found Kilgour on the play for her ninth assist of the season. Danielle Ward then grabbed her first of two goals on the day on a power play for a 3-0 Maine lead. Melissa Gagnon (St. Gilles, Quebec) got her fifth assist of the season on the play while Dawn Sullivan (Enfield, Nova Scotia) got her ninth of the season. Vermont answered with a power play goal of their own at 6:00 in the second period by Krystal Baumann to narrow the lead to 3-1. Klara Myren and Amanda Pelkey picked up the assists on the play for the Catamounts. Danielle Ward then scored her second power play goal of the game and her ninth goal of the season just over 10 minutes later in the period. Brianne Kilgour assisted Ward for her sixth of the season while Melissa Gagnon got her sixth as well. This gave the Black Bears a 4-1 lead entering the third period.
In the third, 17:06 went by before Tori Pasquariello scored her seventh goal of the season and the fifth of the game for Maine for a 5-1 lead. Brianne Kilgour earned her third point of the game with her seventh assist of the season while Missy Denk earned her second point of the day her third assist of the season. Just over 30 seconds later, Catamount Krystal Baumann scored the second goal of the game for Vermont on a power play. Meghan Huertas assisted Bauman on the play as well as Amanda Pelkey for her second assist of the game. Maine would hold the lead and end the game by a score of 5-2.
Black Bear goalie made 23 saves on the 25 shots she faced and earned the win, giving her a season record of 5-4-2. Vermont goalie Roxanne Douville got the loss for the game after stopping 29 of the 33 shots she faced through two periods of play, giving her a season record of 1-6-3. Kelci Lanthier played in net in the third period for the Catamounts, making six saves on the seven shots she faced.
Maine out shot Vermont by a total of 40-25 while going 2-for-7 on the power play. Vermont was 2-for-6 with the advantage.
The Black Bears will travel to Durham, N.H. on Friday for a one game series against the Wildcats. The puck will drop at 7 p.m.
