Men's Basketball Hangs Tough, But Falls to #4 UConn

HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Maine men's basketball team battled tough, fourth-ranked UConn was able to pull away in the second half en route to a 80-60 win over the Black Bears. Maine falls to 1-1 on the season while the defending National Champions are now 3-0. Maine was led by its America East Player of the Game Justin Edwards (Whitby, Onatrio) who had a game-high 20 points.
After falling behind 7-0, the Black Bears went on a 9-to-2 run to knot the game at nine five minutes into the game.
The Huskies would take a 17-12 lead, but Maine came back to tie it at 17 on a pair of Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) free throws.
UConn went on a run to take a 30-23 lead with 5:25 left, but Maine came right back to make it 31-27 as Andrew Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.) made a fantastic layup, driving to the basket and taking contact while laying the ball in.
The teams traded baskets, leaving the Black Bears down 36-31 at halftime.
Maine was led by Kilian Cato (Espoo, Finland) who had eight points in the first half while Singleton had seven.
The Huskies scored the first five points of the second half and built the lead to 42-33 a little over two minutes into the half.
Maine continued to battle, and had several nice plays including Edwards converting a nice layup and the foul with seven minutes left, but the Huskies showed why they were the fourth-ranked team in the country and pulled away.
