Swimming and Diving Opens Season at Husky Invitational

STORRS, Conn. -- The University of Maine swim teams opened up the 2011-12 season with a non-scored meet at the Husky Invitational hosted by UConn. Vermont, Fairfield, Providence and Fordham also took part in the invitational. The Black Bears had several top performances including a few great showings by the newcomers.
On the women's side it was freshman Naja Harvey (Orono, Minnesota) who turned in a pair of top performances. Harvey placed second in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.96 and was third in the 50 yard freestyle at 24.99. Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) also had a solid day as she was sixth in the 400 yard IM at 4:47.46 and seventh in both the 200 IM and 500 yard freestyle with times of 2:16.87 and 5:20.95, respectively. Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) also turned in a fine day with fifth place finish in the 100 yard fly at 59.57 and a seventh place showing in the 200 fly at 2:12.70.
Several other Black Bears also had solid days. Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) placed sixth in the 100 yard freestyle event with a time of 54.35 while Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass.) placed ninth in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:17.29. Freshman Emily Buczkowski (Wooldwich, Maine) touched the wall tenth in the 100 yard backstroke with a final time of 1:01.36.
The women's 200 yard freestyle relay team, made up of Harvey, Dwyer, Trodden and Buczkowski placed second in the event with a time of 1:40.20.
On the men's side it was Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) pacing the squad as he placed seventh in the 500 yard freestyle at 4:57.05 and was ninth in the 200 yard freestyle event at 1:50.62. Zach Hamer (Andover, Mass.) also had a strong showing in a pair of events. Hamer was fifth in the 200 yard breaststroke at 2:18.64 and eighth in the 100 yard breaststroke event with a time of 1:03.01.
Newcomer Ryan Fahey (Quincy, Mass.) placed fourth in his first meet with the Black Bears in the 400 yard IM with a time of 4:23.22. Senior captain Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.) was fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke at 1:01.56 while Jon Davis (Colliervale, Tenn.) placed ninth in the 100 yard backstroke event at 1:01.31. Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine) turned in a tenth place finish in the 200 yard fly with a time of 2:04.13.
The Black Bears return to the pool tomorrow as the men travel to battle Bryant at 12:30 p.m. while the women's squad travels to take part in the New England College Challenge, hosted by Harvard, at 2 p.m.
