Women's Basketball Falls at Home to New Hampshire, 67-47

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team dropped a 67-47 to visiting New Hampshire on Wednesday evening at Alfond Arena. The loss drops Maine back to 3-17 and 1-7 in America East play while New Hampshire improves to 6-14 and 3-15 in league play. Tanna Ross (Newburgh, Maine) was named Maine's America East Player of the Game with 18 points and six rebounds as she was 6-for-9 from three point range.
Katelyn Vanderhoff (Lititz, Pa.) had a solid game for the Black Bears with eight points, five rebounds and four assists while Shareka Maner (Spring Hill, Fla.) provided great defensive pressure for Maine off the bench while also dropping six points with six rebounds .
Cari Reed was the America East Player of the Game for New Hampshire as she notched 27 points and four rebounds while shooting 10-for-17 from the floor.
The Black Bears jumped out to a three point lead, 3:52 into the contest when Ross hit a three to put Maine up 9-6. After Denise Beliveau knocked down a jumper, Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) cashed in on a fastbreak layup off a steal from Ross to once again give Maine a three point advantage with 14:01 to play in the first half.
After trading baskets for the next eight minutes, Maine would go on a 6-0 run to jump out to a 24-18 lead with 3:38 to play in the first half. Vanderhoff would grab a rebound and quickly push the ball up the floor, finding Ross behind the arc who nailed her second three of the half. The Black Bears would get another defensive stand and capitalize when Vanderhoff broke out on a fastbreak and laid the ball of the glass and into the hoop. Reed would cut the Maine lead to three before Ross knocked down another big three to put Maine up by six.
The Wildcats would go on an 8-0 run of their own on a pair of three's by Reed and a layup by Denise Beliveau to take a 26-24 lead into the half.
Maine was led by Ross' nine first half point as she shot 3-for-3 from three point range while pulling down six boards. The Wildcats were led by freshman guard Kelsey Hogan and Reed who each tallied eight points in the half.
New Hampshire would continue their run in the second half as Reed knocked down a pair of threes in the first 1:22 of the half to put the Wildcats up 32-24. Ross would put an end to the run when Roberts found her behind the arc. Ross would hit the three and after a fastbreak lay-in by Robets, the Black Bears would be back within three at 32-29.
The Wildcats would stage an extended run over the next 10 minutes as they took a 17 point lead when Kate Early broke out on the fastbreak, cashing in on a layup to put New Hampshire up 57-40 with 6:49 to play.
The Black Bears would continue to battle down the stretch but ended up falling to New Hampshire 67-47.
Maine returns to action when it travels to battle the Binghamton Bearcats on Saturday, Jan. 29. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
