Women's Basketball Falls at Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y.--The University of Maine women's basketball team fell to Binghamton by the score of 70-43 on Saturday afternoon at the Events Center in Vestal, N.Y. With the loss, Maine falls to 3-18 overall and 1-8 in America East play while Binghamton improves to 14-8 and 7-2 in league play. Maine was led by its America East Player of the Game Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) who had 14 points.
The Black Bears took a quick lead as Roberts sank a jumper from the right elbow. Samantha Baranowski (Stanhope, N.J.) then followed with a nice turnaround jumper from the left block and Roberts followed with a short jumper to get Maine a 6-0 lead.
Binghamton came back to tie the game at seven just under four minutes into the half, and would take the lead with a three-pointer. Baranowski answered with a jumper, and a Roberts layup would give Maine the lead.
The Bearcats responded to take a 15-13 edge with just under 12 minutes remaining, and would take a four-point lead before Brittany Williams (Rochester, N.Y.) got a nice steal and raced the length of the court for the layup.
Maine tied the game when Katelyn Vanderhoff (Lititz, Pa.) made a nice pass into Ali Nalivaika (Worcester, Mass.) down low for an easy layup with just over nine minutes remaining.
The Bearcats took a one-point lead, but the Black Bears would keep it there with a couple of defensive stops courtesy of a pair of blocks.
Williams tied the game at 21 with a jumper from the left elbow with 4:25 left, but Binghamton was able to score the next two buckets.
Corinne Wellington (Rochester, N.Y.) would cut the lead with a pair of free throws, but the Bearcats would score a couple late baskets to take a 33-25 lead into halftime.
Maine was led at the half by Roberts who had six points and by Shareka Maner (Spring Hill, Fla.) who had seven boards.
Binghamton caught fire to start the second half, and took a 43-25 lead a little over three minutes into the second half.
Roberts would get the Black Bears on the board with a nifty layup, cutting through two defenders to get the bucket. She followed that with another nifty basket as she pump-faked from the top of the arc and sprinted through the lane for a layup.
However, the Bearcats would continue to shoot the lights out, and would take a lead that the Black Bears could not overcome down the stretch.
Maner finished with a team-high 13 rebounds while Wellington added six points and seven rebounds.
