Women's Ice Hockey Falls at Northeastern 3-2

BOSTON, Mass. -- The University of Maine women's ice hockey team traded goals with 10th-ranked Northeastern in the final two minutes of the game, but in the end came up a goal short against the Huskies on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 3-2 decision. The Black Bears fall to 9-10-4 on the season and 3-6-2 in Hockey East play, while Northeastern improves to 13-5-4- overall and 5-3-3 in conference play.
After a scoreless first period, Northeastern got on the board just 1:13 into the second period when Siena Falino beat Maine goalie Brittany Ott (St. Claire Shores, Mich.). Lori Antflick and Kristi Kehoe each assisted on the goal.
Maine rookie Kayla Kaluzny (Calgary, Alberta) knotted the score at 1-1 at 12:36 of the second period with a power play goal. Danielle Ward (Lansing, Mich.) picked up and assist on the goal. For Kaluzny, it was her third goal of the season.
The game remained a 1-1 draw until Antflick notched her third goal of the season at 8:21 of the third frame. Falino and Sonia St. Martin each assisted on the goal by Antflick.
Maine pulled Ott in favor of an extra attacker and Julia Marty deposited the puck into the empty-net with 1:26 remaining in the game. For Marty, it was her third goal of the season and came on an assist from Stephanie Gavronsky.
With Ott still pulled, the Black Bears were able to capitalize with an extra attacker. Jennie Gallo (Castlegar, British Columbia) scored her 12th goal of the season with just 25 second remaining. Dominique Goutsis (Coquitlam, British Columbia) and Chloe Tinkler (Wabush, Newfoundland) both assisted on the goal by Gallo. Maine, however, could get no closer and dropped the 3-2 decision.
Maine finished the game with a slim 26-24 edge in shots on goal, including holding an 11-6 edge in the second and an 11-7 advantage in the third. Maine finished 1-for-7 on the power play, while holding Northeastern scoreless in three opportunities.
Maine's Ott stopped 21 shots in goal. She falls to 7-9-0 on the season. Florence Schelling made 24 saves for Northeastern. She improves to 11-5-4 on the season.
The Black Bears return to action on Sunday, Jan. 16 when they travel to Boston University. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 PM.
