Women's Basketball Falls to Albany, 65-50

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine women's basketball team fell to Albany 65-50 on a snowy Wednesday night in Orono, Maine. With the loss, the Black Bears fall to 3-13 on the season and 1-2 in America East play. Albany improves to 10-6 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

The Black Bears were led by their America East Player of the Game Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) who finished with 11 points and six rebounds. It was the eighth straight game that Roberts scored in double-figures. Jaymie Druding (Orchard Park, N.Y.) provided some key minutes off the bench for Maine as she notched a career high 10 points.

Albany was paced by its America East Player of the Game in Cassandra Callaway who had 16 points, two assists and two rebounds on 6-10 shooting. Ebone Henry was also solid for the Great Danes with 17 points and six rebounds.

The two teams traded leads the first few minutes of the contest, with the Black Bears taking a 7-6 advantage with a pair of Roberts free throws with just over 13 minutes remaining in the first half.

Albany then hit back-to-back three point field goals to take a 15-9 lead. Ali Nalivaika (Worcester, Mass.) put a halt to Albany's 7-0 run with a jumper with just under 11 minutes remaining in the first half. Roberts then connected and the Black Bears trailed by three points with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half.

Albany then went on a run to push its lead to 21-13, but Tanna Ross (Newburgh, Maine) drained a three-point field goal to get the Black Bears back within five points. Maine then took a 25-23 lead when Amber Smith (Ipswich, Mass.) drained a three-point field goal with just over four minutes remaining in the first half.

The two teams went into intermission tied 29-29. Maine was led by Nalivaika, who had seven points, while Smith, chipped in with five points and seven boards.

Albany came out firing in the second half and extended its lead to 43-33 with just under 15 minutes remaining in the game on a 10-0 run. Roberts stopped the Albany run with a jumper in the paint. Four straight points by Druding pulled Maine to within seven points at 49-42. Maine, however, would get no closer the remainder of the night.

The University of Maine returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 15 when it hosts Binghamton at 1 PM at Alfond Arena. Fans are encouraged to come out and experience Fandemonium.
