Black Bears Late Run Not Enough, Fall to Binghamton 78-52

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine women's basketball team outscored Binghamton 14-6 in the final 7:33 minutes of the game, but it was not enough as the Black Bears fell 78-52 on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears dip to 3-14 on the season and 1-4 in America East play, while the Bearcats improve to 10-7 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.
Amber Smith (Ipswich, Mass.) was named the Maine America East Player of the Game as she scored 13 points with four rebounds and three assists. For Smith, it was a new career high for points in an America East contest. Ali Nalivaika (Worcester, Mass.), Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.), and Katelyn Vanderhoff (Lititz, Pa.) each chipped in with 10 points as Maine had four players finish in double figures. For Roberts, it was her ninth straight game scoring in double-figures.
Andrea Holmes led Binghamton with 20 points, seven rebounds and nine assists as she was named Binghamton's America East Player of the Game. Viive Rebane, Jackie Ward and Orla O'Reilly each added 12 points for the Bearcats.
Binghamton jumped out to a 10-2 lead, but the Black Bears answered on back-to-back jumpers by Vanderhoff and Smith. The Bearcats then used a 14-2 run to extend its lead to 24-8.
Binghamton took a 37-19 lead into halftime. Maine was led by Smith who had seven points, while Vanderhoff and Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) each added four.
Binghamton continued to add on to its lead in the second half, before the Black Bears made a late run. Maine would knock 12 points off the Bearcats' lead in a six minute span. Nalivaika and Roberts would knock down consecutive jumpers before Vanderhoff cashed in on a nice running layup. Nalivaika would score the next four points on a pair of free throws and a turn around jumper from the left block. After a layup by the Bearcats, Vanderhoff would cash in on back-to-back hoops to cut the lead to 22. However, Maine was unable to finish off the run, dropping the contest 78-52 to Binghamton.
Maine returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 20 when they travel to Vermont for an America East contest against the Catamounts.
