ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine, field hockey team defeated Providence College 3-0 on Friday afternoon at the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears were led by Jocelyn Mitchell (Kanata, Ontario) who had two goals.
The Black Bears got on the board first when Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia) hit a rocket that beat the goalie low with assists from Máire Dineen (Toronto, Ontario) and Alexa Binnendijk (Den Haag, Holland).
Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia) kept the Friars off the board with four first half saves, including a pair of diving stops.
Mitchell would extend the lead to 2-0 in the 48th minute when Dineen took a hard shot at the Providence goalie that would be saved, but Mitchell was there to knock it in the cage.
Mitchell would add an insurance goal in the 53rd minute when Cassandra Mendonca (Thornhill, Ontario) intercepted a pass and slid it to Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia). Newton would find an open Mitchell who beat the goalie to the left side.
Fleck made the lead stand up, as she notched four saves in the half despite the pressure put on by the Friars.
Each team wound up with 10 shots while Maine held an 8-to-6 edge in penalty corners.
The Black Bears return to action on Sunday when they travel to take on the fifth-ranked team in the country, Connecticut, at 12 p.m.
