Field Hockey Falls at #5 Connecticut

STORRS, Conn.--The University of Maine field hockey team fell at #5 Connecticut by the score of 3-0 at the Sherman Complex in Storrs, Conn. on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, Maine falls to 1-1 on the year while Connecticut goes go to 1-0 on season. Maine was led by goalie Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia) who played phenomenally in net, making 13 saves.
The Huskies got on the board in the 31st minute when they were awarded a penalty stroke and Rayell Heistand converted for Connecticut.
Fleck played stellar in the first half, making nine saves and keeping the Husky lead at one.
The Black Bears would continue to battle, but the Connecticut would extend the lead in the 55th minute when Allison Angulo would score off a rebound.
Melissa Gonzalez scored in the 63rd minute off a corner to finish the scoring for the Huskies as Maine was pressing to score.
Brittney Cummings (Belfast, Maine) notched two shots on goal while Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia) also had a shot on net for the Black Bears
Connecticut outshot Maine 22-5 and had 12 penalty corners to Maine's four.
The Black Bears return to action on Thursday, Sept. 2, when they host perennial Big Ten power Michigan at the Maine Field Hockey Complex.
