Two Swimmers Join Prestigious UMaine Honor Societies

ORONO, Maine - Two University of Maine swimming & diving members were inducted into two prestigious UMaine honor societies. Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn.) joined the Senior Skulls, which consists of senior men who have shown outstanding leadership, campus involvement, community service, academic achievement, responsibility, character, and integrity. Samantha Bond (Temple, N.H.) joined the All Maine Women's Society, which is pledged to uphold the ideals, standards and traditions of the University.
Bender is a junior Marine Science major. He has been named Maine's Most Valuable Swimmer for the past two years. Bender has had great performances in each of his first three years at the University of Maine. At this year's America East Championships, Bender broke the school-record in the 400 I.M. on day three. Bender's new time of 4:07.56 broke Don Winant's old time of 4:08.66 that had not been touched since 1978. Bender also spent time this past fall studying abroad in Australia where he got some great hands-on experience diving, studying and exploring the Great Barrier Reef.
Bond is a junior Marine Science major. Bond competed this year at the America East Championships, finishing 28th in the 50 free with a time of 25.33 and 29th in both the 100 free (55.15) and the 100 yard fly (1:03.05). Her time in the 100 free at the Championships was the fourth fastest 100 yard freestyle time for the Black Bears all season. Bond also had a strong showing at the Boston University Invitational, placing fourth at 25.92. She also had a solid swim in the 100 free against Bates College, touching the wall at 57.64, good for fourth place in helping Maine defeat Bates at that meet, 164-120.
Both were named to the America East Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll last season and received Maine Scholar-Athlete Silver Medals this season.
