Men's Basketball Falls to Delaware State

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to Delaware State by the score of 75-56 on Monday night at the Alfond Arena. With the loss, Maine goes to 2-5 on the year while Delaware State improves to 4-3. The Black Bears were led by America East Player of the Game Murphy Burnatowski (Waterloo, Ontario) who had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Maine took a 10-6 lead six minutes into the game on a Troy Barnies (Auburn, Maine) layup with the assist coming from Sean McNally (Gardiner, Maine) who tipped the ball by two defenders on a rebound.
After a Delaware State bucket, Maine erupted for a 10-to-2 run to take a 20-10 lead with nine minutes left in the first stanza. The Hornets would battle back to tie the game at 26, and take a three-point lead with nine seconds left. Maine answered as Andrew Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.) banked in a runner at the buzzer to cut the Delaware State lead to 29-28 at halftime.
Maine was led by Burnatowki's seven points and three rebounds while McNally had three points, three rebounds and three assists.
The Black Bears shot 41.7 percent from the field in the first stanza while the Hornets shot 38.7 percent.
In the second half, the Hornets opened up on a 12-to-2 run and held a 41-30 lead five minutes in. They would stretch it to 52-35 with eight minutes to go, but Maine would go on a 16-to-9 run to cut the lead to 61-51 with 4:37 left on a Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif.) three-pointer
The Black Bears continued to battle, but could get no closer.
Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) added 11 points while Barnies had four points and 11 rebounds.
Casey Walker had 25 points to lead Delaware State.
Maine shot 37 percent from the field while Delaware State shot 45.8 percent. The Black Bears shot 21.1 percent from distance while the Hornets were at 38.1 percent.
Maine continues play on Wednesday at Atlantic-10 foe UMass.
