Men's Basketball Falls in Nail-Biter to Brown

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine men's basketball team lost a heartbreaking game to Brown University by the score of 62-54 on Saturday afternoon at the Alfond Arena. With the loss, Maine is 2-4 on the year while Brown improves to 4-3. Maine was led by America East Player of the Game Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) who had 11 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Brown jumped out to an early lead on the Black Bears with a pair of three-pointers. Maine's Troy Barnies (Auburn, Maine) hit a free throw to get the scoring started and followed it up with a jump shot. With the help of Murphy Burnatowski's (Waterloo, Ontario) back-to-back jumpers, the Black Bears had a 7-6 lead.
Brown would eventually take a 17-12 lead with seven minutes left, and expand it to 25-19 with 3:35 left. The Black Bears answered with a 9-to-2 run capped by a Mike Allison (Lynden, Ontario) buzzer-beating jumper to give Maine a 28-27 lead at halftime.
Burnatowski led Maine with 12 points in the first half. Both teams struggled from the floor, with Maine shooting 35.5 percent and Brown shooting 30.8 percent.
In the second half, Maine pushed the lead to 34-27 two minutes in on a Barnies jumper and held a 46-41 lead with 11 minutes left on a Burnatowski trifecta.
Brown would answer to tie the game at 46 with nine minutes to play and neither team could take more than a two-point edge until Brown converted two free throws with 23 seconds left.
On the ensuing Black Bear possession, Singleton drove to the hole and took some contact, but could not convert. Brown would gather the rebound and make free throws the rest of the way to seal the win.
Burnatowski finished with 15 points while Barnies ended up with nine points, seven rebounds and four steals.
Peter Sullivan led Brown with 21 points.
Maine wound up going 21-for-58 from the field while Brown went 20-for-51.
