Women's Basketball Falls to Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Maine women's basketball team (1-8) fell to Penn State (9-2) 95-41 Sunday at the Bryce Jordan Center. The Lady Lions used hot shooting from behind the arc to pick up their ninth win. Penn State drained 10 three pointers and shot 52.6% from behind the line.
Amber Smith (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) scored in double figures for the seventh time this season. She led the Black Bears with 14 points, while Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del./Concord) added 10 points.
Corinne Wellington (Rochester, N.Y./Wilson Magnet) led the Black Bears' rebounding effort and set a career high with 11 rebounds. Maine tallied 36 rebounds to Penn State's 49. UMaine only recorded 25 in their last game at Penn.
Four players scored in double figures for the Lady Lions. They were led by Maggie Lucas' 22 points. Lucas drained 8 field goals with half of those coming from behind the arc. Zhaque Gray, Nikki Greene and Mia Nickson also scored in double figures. Greene tallied a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, while Nickson just missed one with 10 points and 9 boards.
The Black Bears used the sixth different lineup of the season, starting Roberts, Tanna Ross (Newburgh, Maine/Hampden Academy), Smith, Katelyn Vanderhoff (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) and Jaymie Druding (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park).
Ross made her first start since March 1st, 2009 at Boston U, and Roberts made the first start of her career. Maine played without America East Third Team selection, Samantha Wheeler (Derry, N.H./Timberlane Regional), for the fourth-straight game.
Penn State opened up a 49-13 halftime lead behind hot shooting from behind the three-point line. The Lady Lions drained seven of their 12 three-point attempts and shot 48.6% from the floor in the half. The Black Bears opened the first half 0 for 9 from the field before Ross drained a three pointer with 12:56 to play. UMaine scored their first four points from on two trips to the free throw line. Maine notched only two first half field goals, and both came from behind the arc.
Roberts led the Black Bears with four points in the period. She drained all four points from the free throw line. UMaine missed only one shot from the charity stripe and shot 87.5% from there in the half. Wellington led Maine on the boards with six rebounds. Maine pulled down 22 boards to Penn State's 27.
Shareka Maner (Spring Hill, Fla./Nature Coast) appeared in the first half and played in her second-straight game.
Roberts scored the first points of the second half after she stole a pass and drained a layup in the opening minutes of the period. Penn State; however, opened up a 40-point lead with 18:11 to play. The Lady Lions opened their largest lead of the game with 9:31 remaining in the half and led by 55 points.
The Black Bears take the court next after finals in Florida at the Stetson Classic.
