Women's Basketball Falls in Final Seconds Against Winthrop

DELAND, Fla. - The Maine women's basketball team (1-9) battled back from a nine-point halftime deficit and pulled to within three of Winthrop (3-6) in the final seconds but fell 54-51. Tanna Ross (Newburgh, Maine/Hampden Academy) took a three on the final shot of the game but it hit off the rim and bounced away. The Black Bears outscored the Eagles 32-26 in the second half and shot 40% from the field.
Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del./Concord) led Maine with a career-high 16 points in 33 minutes of action, while Katelyn Vanderhoff (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) added 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Roberts scored her previous high of 12 points at Bryant. Vanderhoff played all 40 minutes for the first time since at Stony Brook last season.
Winthrop led 28-19 at halftime behind a 14-3 run over the final 11 minutes of the period. Both teams shot well in the early going with both squads making over 45% of their shots from the field with eight minutes to go. Maine and Winthrop exchanged the lead four times and recorded three ties. Roberts led the Black Bears and tied a career-high with 12 points, while Ashley Cox scored 12 points for the Eagles.
Maine opened up a 5-2 lead to start the first half but trailed by five, 10-5, with 17:17 to go. The Black Bears battled back and retook the lead on Roberts' 10th point. Winthrop jumped back ahead, 16-14, with 11:00 minutes to play. The Eagles finished with a 14-3 run to lead 28-19 at the break.
Maine opened the second half with seven unanswered points and pulled to within two, 28-26, with 16:40 left in the period. Ross tied the game at 28-28 with a fast-break layup with 14:26 remaining. Winthrop drained their first basket of the second half on a three by Lacey Lyons.
Lyons hit back-to-back threes to retake a 34-28 lead for the Eagles with 12:38 to play. The Black Bears tied the game back up at 36-36 on a Vanderhoff three, but a 6-0 Eagle run put Winthrop back on top 42-36 with eight minutes to play. The Black Bears kept it close but missed four free throws in the final minute of the contest. Ross took the final shot of the game but missed the game-tying shot.
Maine will face Stetson tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Hatters defeated Youngstown State 79-67 in the first game of the day.
