Terrance Mitchell Leads Men's Basketball to 74-54 Win Over Norfolk State; Governor Baldacci Honored Before Game

ORONO, Maine--Terrance Mitchell (Milton, Fla.) scored 22 points to lead the University of Maine men's basketball team to a 74-54 win over Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon in the Memorial Gym. With the win, Maine goes to 4-5 on the year while Norfolk State falls to 1-7.
The Black Bears got off to a quick 7-0 lead courtesy of five points from Murphy Burnatowski (Waterloo, Ontario). The Spartans would answer and tie the game at 14 just over seven minutes into the half.
However, Maine would take control with a 19-to-5 run that included a tough one-handed dunk by Mike Allison (Lynden, Ontario). Mitchell ended the half with five straight points to put the Black Bears up 38-24 at halftime.
Mitchell needed just six first half minutes to score 10 points while Troy Barnies (Auburn, Maine) added nine. The Black Bears shot a blistering 62.5 percent from the field while holding the Spartans to 40 percent from the field. Maine grabbed 17 boards to Norfolk State's 10.
Maine put the game away with a 20-to-7 run in the first nine minutes of the second half. Mitchell accounted for three three-pointers and got fouled on one to notch 10 points in two minutes to finish of the run.
The Black Bears would play well the rest of the way to take the win.
Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif.) scored 12 points to go with four rebounds while Barnies finished with nine points and five rebounds. Burnatowski also finished with nine while Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) and Andrew Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.) each added five assists.
Maine shot 54 percent from the floor, including 45.5 percent from long range while holding Norfolk State to 34.6 percent. The Black Bears won the rebounding battle 34-28.
Governor Baldcacci was honored before the game for his efforts in procuring an appropriation for the Memorial Gym renovation.
Maine continues play on Sunday, Dec. 19 against Colgate in the Alfond Arena.
