Tanna Ross Notches Career-High 27 Points in Black Bears' Loss to Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Despite a career high from Tanna Ross (Newburgh, Maine/Hampden Academy), Kansas (7-0) secured program win number 700 with a 126-63 decision over Maine (1-5) Wednesday night. Twelve of the Black Bears' 13 players that made the trip saw game action at historic Allen Fieldhouse.
"Obviously we knew they were a good team coming in. They had more size than us, which was a clear advantage," said head coach Cindy Blodgett. "They scored 74 points in the paint and that is pretty tough to overcome. We didn't help ourselves, a couple of times we didn't box out on free throws and they scored baskets as a result."
Ross, who came into the contest averaging 11 points per game against BCS foes, more than doubled that against the Jayhawks. She finished the night with 27 points in 27 minutes. Ross drained 9 of 14 shots from behind the field and notched seven three pointers.
Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del./Concord) was second on the team with eight points and led Maine with six rebounds. Amber Smith (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) finished the night with seven points, while Katelyn Vanderhoff (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) scored four points, tallied four rebounds and added a career-high eight assists.
Kansas had five players score in double figures. Krysten Boogaard drained 33 points to lead all players. Carolyne Davis added 25 points, while Aishah Sutherland tallied 17 points.
Jaymie Druding (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) and Greer Babbe (Papillion, Neb./Papillion-La Vista) both saw early first half action. Druding appeared in her fifth-straight contest, while Babbe played in the second game of her career and scored her first career bucket in the second half.
Kansas native, Sheay Longstaff (Topeka, Kan./Coffeyville C.C.) made her Maine debut to a roaring ovation from the home crowd. Longstaff and Babbe both had numerous family and friends in the attendance.
Kansas became the first team to score 100 points against the Black Bears since UConn defeated Maine 105-75 in the first round of the NCAA tournament on March 16, 1995. Connecticut went on to win the national title over Tennessee that season.
Kansas opened up a 69-26 first half lead behind 66.7% shooting from the floor. The Jayhawks scored 38 points in the paint and 20 off Maine turnovers. Krysten Boogaard led KU with 15 points off the bench in the half; Ross led the Black Bears with 11 points. Smith added seven more points and scored UMaine's first two baskets.
Roberts drained a layup on her first shot, while Ross drained a three in her first minute of action. Ross added a three pointer with 6:27 to play in the first half and drained her third of the half three minutes later. Smith followed with a three of her own on the next possession.
Maine continues the six-game road trip at Holy Cross Saturday.
