Holy Cross Capitalizes on Late Maine Scoring Drought

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Maine Black Bears (1-6) recorded the second most points of the season, but a late scoring drought allowed Holy Cross to record their fourth win of the season. Katelyn Vanderhoff (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) powered the Black Bears with a career high 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Amber Smith (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) and Tanna Ross (Newburgh, Maine/Hampden Academy) also scored in double figures for Maine, while Jaymie Druding (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) and Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del./Concord) added nine points each.
Ross scored in double figures in consecutive games for the first time in her career since games two and three of the 2008-09 season. Smith recorded her fifth double-digit scoring performance of the season with 11 points and added nine rebounds.
The Black Bears finished the night shooting 50% from the floor but did not score for nearly four minutes in the second half.
Druding and Greer Babbe (Papillion, Neb./Papillion-La Vista) both recorded their first starts of their career Saturday.
Whitney Fremeau drained a last-second jumper to tie the game at 39-39 at halftime. The 39 points were the most Maine has scored in a first half this season. The Black Bears shot 47% from the floor in the period and had eight different players record points. Druding, Smith and Vanderhoff each scored seven points, while Roberts and Rachele Burns (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) added five points each.
Brittany Williams (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) scored the first points of the game on a pair of free throws with 18:24 remaining in the first half. Smith drained a pair of back-to-back baskets and had five points in the first three minutes. Burns drained a three to give UMaine its largest lead of the first half at 20-15 with 10:49 to play. Holy Cross scored eight unanswered points to jump ahead 23-20 with 9:51 to play. The Crusaders led by as many as four points before the Black Bears took a two-point lead in the final minute.
Holy Cross opened the second half with a quick three to break the halftime tie. Maine jumped back ahead by two points on a pair of baskets by Vanderhoff. The sophomore guard quickly tied her career high of 15 points in the first seven minutes of the half. Ross drained back-to-back threes to give Maine a 57-55 lead with 11:30 to play. The Crusaders retook the lead and led 60-59 with 7:24 to play. Holy Cross opened up a 10-point lead in the final five minutes of the second half.
The Black Bears hit the road for two games in the state of Pennsylvania next weekend.
