Men's Basketball Falls at Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn.--The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to Quinnipiac by the score of 75-67 on Monday night at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. With the loss, Maine falls to 2-3 on the year while Quinnipiac, the defending NEC Regular Season Champion, goes to 4-1. Maine was led by its America East Player of the Game Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) who had 18 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Quinnipiac jumped out to a 6-2 lead, but Singleton quickly made a pair of three-pointers to knot the game at eight.
The teams exchanged baskets, and with just under 12 minutes left the score was tied at 15.
Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) would score the next four Black Bear points on moves down low to give Maine a 19-16 lead.
Maine would then go on a 10-to-4 run capped by a Murphy Burnatowski three-pointer to take a 29-20 lead with just under six minutes to play in the first half.
Quinnipiac would close the gap, but Maine would take a 39-34 lead into halftime courtesy of a pair of Malachi Peay (Brooklyn, N.Y.) free throws with nine seconds left.
Singleton led the Black Bears with eight points in the first half.
The Bobcats opened the second half on a run to take a 44-41 lead, but Fraser would make a nice move to get a layup and the foul to tie the game.
Maine would take a 50-46 lead as Terrance Mitchell (Milton, Fla.) made four consecutive free throws with just over 12 minutes to play, but the Bobcats would take a 51-50 lead before Maine answered to take a one-point lead.
Quinnipiac would go on a run to take a 59-52 lead with 4:39 left, but Maine would rally to close it to 63-59 with a little over two minutes left.
The Black Bears continued to battle but could get no closer.
Quinnipiac won the rebounding battle 43-30 while both teams shot 38 percent from the floor.
Mitchell would finish with 16 points in his first game of the season while Fraser notched 12 points, four rebounds and four blocks.
