Men's Basketball Overpowers UMaine-Machias, 95-44

ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine men's basketball team dominated from the opening tip en route to a 95-44 victory over UMaine-Machias on Friday evening at the Alfond Arena. With the win, Maine goes to 2-1 on the season while Machias falls to 3-2. Maine was led by its America East Player of the Game Murphy Burnatowski (Waterloo, Ontario) who had 17 points including four dunks.
Burnatowski scored the first five points on a three-pointer followed by a two-handed dunk with a nice assist from Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.).
Sean McNally (Gardiner, Maine) followed with a layup and Singleton would add another as Maine took a 9-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest.
The Clippers would get on the board, but Maine followed that up with a 15-to-2 run courtesy of five more points from Burnatowski, including another dunk as the Black Bears opened the game up to take a 24-5 lead eight minutes into the game.
Maine would cruise the rest of the half to take a 56-24 lead into halftime.
Burnatowski scored 15 of his game-high 17 points in the first stanza to give Maine a big cushion. Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif.) added 13 on 4-of-8 shooting while Singleton pitched in with five assists and three steals.
Maine shot an impressive 73.3 percent from the field in the first half while limiting the Clippers to 42.1 percent shooting.
The Black Bears opened up the second half on an 11-to-2 run to make the lead 67-26, and would continue to control the game en route to the victory.
Freshman Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) notched 10 points, four rebounds and three assists while McNally finished with 13 points and three assists. Singleton added a game-high eight assists. Travon Wilcher (Springfield, Mass.) had a nice put-back dunk in the second half.
Maine finished the game shooting 62.5 percent from the field while holding Machias to 33.3 percent shooting. Maine won the rebounding battle 35-17.
The Black Bears head out on the road to battle the Big East's Notre Dame Fighting Irish at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
