Men's Basketball Falls to National Power Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md.--The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to national power Maryland by the score of 89-59 on Sunday afternoon at the Comcast Center in College Park, Md. With the loss Maine is now 1-1 on the year while Maryland is 3-0. The Black Bears were led by Troy Barnies (Auburn, Maine) who had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
The Terrapins got off to a quick start, taking an 8-0 lead 2:30 into the game.
Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif.) would get the Black Bears on the board with a tough layup. He then made a tough floater from just inside the free throw line and got fouled. He converted the free throw to complete the three-point play.
The teams battled back and forth, with Maine slowly chipping away at the lead.
The Black Bears made a stop, and Barnies made a nice turn around to close the gap to 15-11 just over six minutes into the game.
Barnies then made a nifty pass down low to Murphy Burnatowski (Waterloo, Ontario) who made a nice turn around layup down low around his man to close the gap to 15-13.
The Terrapins would score the next four points, but a Burnatowski three from the top of the arc cut the lead to three. Maryland would score the next seven points, but a Burnatowski three-pointer would cut the lead to 28-23 with 7:19 left in the half.
Maryland then went on a 12-to-1 run, and would continue to pressure the Black Bears to take a 52-29 lead into halftime.
Maine was led in the first half by Burnatowski who had 11 points and three rebounds while Malachi Peay (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added three points and four rebounds.
The Black Bears shot 37.5 percent from the field while the Terrapins shot 57.1 percent.
Maine continued to battle in the second half, and had several nice plays, but could not quite close the gap the rest of the way.
Burnatowksi finished with 17 points and four rebounds while Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) had seven points and three assists.
