
Black Bear Swimming and Diving Competes Against Keene State, Vermont

KEENE, N.H. -- The University of Maine women and men's swim and dive teams competed against Vermont and Keene State on Saturday afternoon. The women's team defeated Keene State 175-119 but lost to Vermont 192-105. The men dropped a meet to Keene State, 181-105. Their meet against Vermont was not scored. Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) was stellar on the diving boards for the women as she took first place in both the one meter and three meter dives. Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.) and Travis Wibby (South Portland, Maine) led things on the men's side as they both picked up a win and a second place finish.
Capossela continued her string of great performances on the diving board as she won both the one and three meter events for Maine. Capossela was first in the one meter with a score of 235.85 and also took home first place honors in the three meter with a final point tally of 238.75. The Black Bears swept the top three spots in the three meter with Capossela winning the event, followed by Juliet Cobb (Bangor, Maine) with a score of 192.90 and Ashley Higgins (Bangor, Maine) who took third place with a score of 166.20.
Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va.) had a solid day of swimming for the Black Bears. Shelley placed second in both the 200 IM (2:19.82) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.78). Shelley also picked up a third place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.16. Jennifer Trodden (Reading, Mass.) followed up Shelley in the 200-yard breaststroke with a third place finish in 2:31.27.
Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) placed second in the 500-yard freestyle for Maine with a time of 5:19.81. Bender also placed third in both the 200-yard IM (2:19.82) and the 1000-yard freestyle (10:53.64).
The Black Bears placed second and third in the 50-yard freestyle event as Emily Puleio (Saco, Maine) placed second with a time of 25.42 and Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) was third at 25.66.
Maine finished the meet strong as the team of Helaina Sacco (Rochest, Mass.), Courtney Mellish (Barrie, Ontario), Dwyer and Puleio won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:42.55.
On the men's side, the Black Bears took home the top two spots in the 200-yard breaststroke. Landry won the event with a 2:18.77. Landry also finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke event with a final time of 1:03.49.
Wibby turned in a strong performance for Maine on the diving boards as he won the three meter event with a score of 129.65. Wibby also was strong in the one meter as he took home second place honors with a score of 208.30.
Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) placed second in the 1000-yard freestyle event with a time of 9:58.34. He was followed up by Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn.) who placed third in 10:11.56. Bender also placed second in the 200-yard fly at 2:01.58.
The Black Bear relay teams both had solid days, taking home a pair of second place finishes. James Forest (Columbia, Md.), Landry, Andrew MacKeil (Biddeford, Maine) and Daniel Duvall (Durham, N.H.) placed second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:41.72. The team of Andrew Meehan (Brewer, Maine), Duvall, Dan Macdonald (Melrose, Mass.), and Roy Warren Jr. (North Palm Beach, Fla.) took home second place in the 400 freestyle relay with a final time of 3:22.88.
Both teams return to action on Dec. 3 when they take part in the two day URI Invitational. Day one begins at 5 p.m.
