KINGSTON, R.I. -- The University of Maine men's swimming and diving team defeated URI on Saturday by a score of 172-110. The Black Bears were led by junior Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.) who picked up wins in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Landry won four events for Maine over the weekend as he also grabbed a pair of wins against Bryant the day before. Senior captain Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn.) also had a solid day for Maine as he won the 200 fly and finished second in the 1000 free.
Landry swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke events for the Black Bears over the weekend. At URI, Landry placed first in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.60 and also won the 200 breaststroke event with a time of 2:09.72. Finished right behind Landry in the URI breaststroke events was junior Zachary Hamer (Andover, Mass.). Hamer was second in the 100 breaststroke at 1:05.42 and touched the wall second at 2:19.33 in the 200 yard breaststroke race.
Bender placed first in the 200 fly at 2:03.64 and was second in the 1000 free at 10:18.58. Teammate Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) won the 1000 freestyle swim with a winning time of 10:07.29.
Junior Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine) picked up a win in the 100 fly for Maine, touching the wall at 54.67. Freshman James Forest (Columbia, Md.) had a great day for the Black Bears, scoring points in three different races. Forest won the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.99, was second in the 100 backstroke at 57.52 and was also second in the 200 backstroke at 2:09.72.
Tim Smith (Bangor, Maine) won both diving events for the Black Bears. Smith racked up 223.51 points to win the one meter while finishing with 213.52 points in the three meter.
The Black Bears swim back into action on Saturday, Nov. 6 when they host Stony Brook in the home opener for Maine at 11 a.m.
