Field Hockey Drops Regular Season Finale to #16 Boston University, 2-1 in OT

BOSTON, Mass. -- The University of Maine field hockey team dropped their regular season finale 2-1 in overtime to #16 Boston University on Saturday evening. The loss drops the Black Bears to 13-5 on the season and 2-3 in America East play. With the win, Boston University moves to 10-7 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The victory locked up the number three seed for Boston University in the America East tournament while Maine will be the fourth seed. Kelly Newton (Vancouver, B.C.) scored the lone goal for the Black Bears.
Newton opened the scoring 33:42 into the first half when she notched her 18th goal of the season. The goal was setup off a corner play in which senior captain Courtney Veinotte (Caanan, Maine) put slid the ball into play. After a shot was blocked, Veinotte gathered the rebound and fired a shot towards the Terrier cage. Newton was in great position, tipping the ball into the back of the cage to put Maine up 1-0. The goal gives Newton 43 points on the year, just points shy of the school-record for points in a season.
The Black Bears would hold their lead for the majority of the contest until Andrea Greene tied the score with just 1:26 remaining in regulation. The goal would develop off a penalty corner and ended with Greene tipping the ball past Maine goalkeeper Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, B.C.) to tie the score at 1-1. Nicole van Oosterom assisted on the goal for the Terriers.
Boston University would notch the game winner 1:25 into the overtime period when Jacinda McLeod cashed in off a penalty corner that was setup by Maryette Stuart.
Fleck was solid in the cage for Maine as she made five saves but takes the tough loss, dropping to 13-4 on the season. Terrier goalkeeper Amanda Smith made six saves and improves her record to 9-4.
Boston University held the edge in shots, 15-12, while the Black Bears had six penalty corner to the Terriers' five.
The Black Bears will be the number four seed in the America East Field Hockey tournament. The Black Bears will play the top seeded New Hampshire Wildcats on Friday, Nov. 5 at Memorial Field on the campus of the University of New Hampshire. A start time for this game has yet to be announced.
