KINGSTON, R.I. -- The University of Maine women's swimming and diving team lost to URI by a score of 180-127 on Saturday afternoon. The Black Bears were led by freshman diver Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) who won both of the diving events for Maine. Senior captain Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va.) also picked up a win for the Black Bears, touching the wall first in the 100 breaststroke event.
Capossela swept the diving events for the Black Bears as she placed first in the one meter with a final score of 227.47 and was also first in the three meter dive with a score of 248.70.
Shelley picked up a win for Maine in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall at 1:09.36. It was the second win of the weekend for Shelley in the 100 yard breaststroke event.
Junior Alicia Hahn (Falmouth, Maine) picked up a pair of second place finishes for the Black Bears. Hahn placed second in the 1000 back with a time of 1:02.90 and was also second in the 200 back at 2:11.61. Kara Dubiel (Carefree, Ariz.) and Lauren Thornbrough (San Diego, Calif.) were second and third in the 1000 yard freestyle. Dubiel finished second with a time of 10:48.36 while Thornbrough was third at 11:17.17.
Junior Nicole Langlois (Washington D.C.) also scored points for Maine, placing second in the 500 free with a time of 5:22.80. Freshman Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) took home third place in the 200 IM, touching the wall at 2:18.82.
The Black Bears ended things on a high note Saturday, winning the 400 freestyle relay event with a time of 3:45.78. Swimming on the winning 400 FR team was Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine), Samantha Bond (Temple, N.H.), Thornbrough and Courtney Mellish (Barrie, Ontario). It was the second win in a row for the Black Bears in the 400 FR event as a team from Maine also won the event yesterday at Bryant University.
Maine returns to competition next Saturday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. when they host their home opener against Stony Brook at the Stanley M. Wallce pool.
