Newton's Four Goals Lift Maine over Dartmouth, 6-1

HANOVER, N.H. -- Kelly Newton (Vancouver, B.C.) notched four goals and an assist to help lead the University of Maine field hockey team to a 6-1 victory over Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon. The Black Bears move to 8-3 on the season with the win while Dartmouth falls to 7-2. Brittney Cummings (Belfast, Maine) also had a solid day for Maine as she scored a pair of goals.
Newton started the scoring as Maine would capitalize off a corner play to take a 1-0 lead. Alexa Binnendijk (Den Haag, Holland) controlled the ball for Maine and slid a pass to Newton who buried a shot into the back of the cage.
Newton put Maine up 2-0 after forcing a Big Green turnover. After stealing the ball, Newton dribbled in and lifted a shot over Dartmouth goalkeeper Meagan Vakiener for the score. Jocelyn Mitchell (Kanata, Ontario) assisted on the play for Maine.
After Kelly McHenry cut the Maine lead in half with a goal for Dartmouth, Newton would put Maine back up by two goals. At 22:01 into the first half, Newton controlled the ball for the Black Bears, dribble in alone, and beat Vakiener to put Maine up 3-1. For Newton, it was her first hat trick of the season.
Maine would add to its lead just 3:17 into the second half. Newton and Mitchell would hook up down the sidelines and eventually find Cummings. Cummings would turn it on and carry the ball down the sidelines into the Dartmouth zone before sliding a shot past Vakiener.
Newton would pick up her fourth goal of the contest when she capitalized on a rebound and slapped the ball into the back of the cage. It was Newton's ninth point of the day, falling just one point shy of the record for points in a game, which she is a co-holder of. Maire Dineen (Toronto, Ontario) assisted on the goal for Maine.
Cummings would tack on her second goal of the day at 64:40 after receiving a pass from Courtney Glynn (Hampton, N.H.). The goal gave Maine a 6-1 lead that they would hold on to, picking up their eighth victory of the season.
Maine goalkeeper Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, B.C.) picks up her eighth win of the season after making 10 saves. Vakiener falls to 6-2 on the season after making seven saves in the loss.
Maine returns to America East action on Saturday, Oct. 9 when they travel to face Albany in a 4 p.m. contest. The Black Bears will then travel to face Brown University the following day at 3 p.m.
