Field Hockey Wins Fifth Straight, Honors Seven Seniors

ORONO, Maine -- Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia) scored three first half goals as the University of Maine field hockey team moved to 13-4 on the season with a 7-1 victory over Hofstra (6-10). Before the game, the Black Bears held a ceremony to honor their seven seniors as well as manager Kylen Donovan.
Gardiner got the scoring started for Maine as she cleaned up a rebound and slid a shot that snuck by Pride goalkeeper Kaitlyn De Turo to give Maine an early 1-0 lead.
Junior forward Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) picked up Maine's second goal of the afternoon at the 6:24 mark. Newton gathered the ball to the left of De Turo. De Turo came out of the net to challenge Newton who flicked a shot over De Turo's left shoulder and into the back of the cage. For Newton, it was her 17th goal of the season, a new career high for her in that category.
Gardiner would pick up the next goal for Maine, 8:54 into the first half. Senior Cassandra Mendonca (Thornhill, Ontario) sent a long pass down the sideline that was gathered by Gardiner. Gardiner carried the ball in to the circle and blasted a shot into the right corner of the cage for the score.
Gardiner would pick up her hat trick goal, and 13th total goal of the season, 12:07 into the contest off a corner play. Senior Mallory Anderson (Hampton Falls, N.H.) made the stop for Maine as Alexa Binnendijk (Den Haag, Holland) blasted a shot toward the Pride cage. Gardiner was in great position as she stuck her stick out and tipped the ball into the back of the cage, giving Maine a 4-0 advantage. Gardiner set a new personal career high of 13 goals in a season on the play.
Kallie Aldus (Belfast, Maine) and Brittney Cummings (Belfast, Maine) would hook up on a nice exchange 8:24 into the second half for Maine's fifth goal. Aldus controlled the ball in the circle to the left of the Pride cage. She sent a shot in front of the cage that was redirected home by Cummings. For Cummings, it was her fifth goal of the season.
Hofstra would get on the scoreboard at the 55:32 mark when Micaela Gallagher slid a pass to Arielle Williams off a corner play. Williams then fired a shot at the Maine cage that snuck by Maine goalkeeper Alicia Frisch (Calgary, Alberta).
Junior Jocelyn Mitchell (Kanata, Ontario) would score the sixth goal for the Black Bears at 61:46 when she tipped home a shot from senior Maire Dineen (Toronto, Ontario). For Mitchell, it was her 16th goal of the season.
The Black Bears would end their scoring when junior Courtney Glynn (Hampton, N.H.) notched her second goal of the season off an assist by Mitchell at the 66:04 mark, giving Maine a 7-1 victory.
Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, B.C.) played the first half in the cage for Maine and improves her record to 13-3 on the season. Frisch made five saves for Maine, giving up one goal, as she played the final 35 minutes in the cage for Maine. Kaitlyn De Turo picked up the loss for Hofstra and falls to 0-1 on the season after making five saves. Amanda Heyde made two saves for the Pride in 22:54 of play.
The Black Bears honored their seven seniors, Aldus, Anderson, Cummings, Dineen, Mendonca, Michelle Niedziejko (West Chester, Pa.) and Courtney Veinotte (Canaan, Maine) in a ceremony before the game. To view the ceremony, please click on the 2010 Senior Ceremony link.
The Black Bears end the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 30 when they travel to Boston University for an America East contest. Game time is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
