Women's Swimming Falls at CCSU, 167.5-129.5

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The University of Maine Women's Swimming and Diving team dropped their meet to Central Connecticut State University by a score of 167.5-129.5 on Saturday afternoon. The Black Bears were led by sophomore Jennifer Trodden (Reading, Mass.) who picked up a win and a second place. Freshmen Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) and Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) each had a pair of second place finished for Maine. Freshman Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) won both the one meter and three meter dive events for the Black Bears.
Trodden, Bender and Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va.) took first, second and third place honors in the 200 IM event. Trodden won the event with a time of 2:16.12. Bender touched the wall at 2:18.17 while Shelley came in third at 2:18.65
Trodden also was strong in the 200 yard breaststroke race as she finished second with a time of 2:30.37. Bender picked up a second place finish of her own in the 1000 yard freestyle event, touching the wall at 10:52.10.
Dwyer picked up a pair of second place finishes for the Black Bears as she was second in the 50 yard freestyle sprint at 25.57 and second in the 100 yard fly with a time of 1:01.45.
The Black Bears dominated the diving events as they took first, second and third place in both the one and three meter dives. Capossela won both events for Maine as she scored 241.12 in the one meter and 235.27 in the three meter. Ashley Higgins (Bangor, Maine) was second in the one meter at 169.12 and third in the three meter with a final score of 154.72. Juliet Cobb (Bangor, Maine) took second place in the three meter dive with a score of 173.62 while she was third in the one meter with a score of 151.15.
The Black Bears finished off the meet by taking second place in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The team of Dwyer, Kara Dubiel (Carefree, Ariz.), Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario), and Helaina Sacco (Rochester, Mass.) finished the event in 3:41.97.
The Black Bears return to action on Oct. 23 when they travel to Boston University for a 1:30 p.m. meet.
