Field Hockey Shuts Out Davidson, 2-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The University of Maine Black Bears picked up their second win in two days on Monday when they defeated Davidson by a score of 2-0 in a neutral site game played at Brown University. The win gives the Black Bears double digits in victories this season as they improved to 10-4 while Davidson falls to 10-3. Maine was led by junior forwards Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) and Jocelyn Mitchell (Kanata, Ontario) who each tallied a goal.
Maine wasted no time getting on the board as they jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 2:31 into the first half when Newton carried the ball in and beat Davidson goalkeeper Sarah Fisher for her thirteenth goal of the season.
Exactly nine minutes later, Mitchell would tally her own unassisted goal to give Maine a 2-0 advantage.
The Black Bears would hold on and fight off a second half surge by Davidson as Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia) picked up her third shut out victory of the season after making five saves. Fisher also made five saves for Davidson but takes the loss and falls to 9-3 on the season. Fleck picks up her tenth win of the season as her records stands at 10-3.
Maine returns to action on Oct. 17 when they welcome Fairfield to the Maine Field Hockey Complex for an America East contest beginning at 3 p.m.
