Brian Woodbury ’14 joined the Black Bear coaching staff on Oct. 1, 2020.
As a student-athlete at Maine, Woodbury was a double major in Psychology and Sociology with concentrations in Abnormal/Social Psychology and Sociology of Crime, Law, and Deviance. He also completed a minor in Legal Studies, and was recognized as a Dean’s List student, Scholar-Athlete, and named to the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Athletically, Woodbury served as a captain and earned All-America East selections in the outdoor shot put and discus, as well as an All-New England selection in the indoor shot put. After graduation, he gained professional experience with Apple Inc. and Bank of America while gaining coaching experience with Scarborough High School Track & Field, Scarborough Football, and founding SlingSHOT Throws in 2017.
Through SlingSHOT Throws, Woodbury coached 3 New Balance National Champions and an additional All-American. He also helped to develop state record holders in Maine (weight throw and hammer), New Hampshire (discus), Massachusetts (shot put and decathlon), and North Carolina (shot put). In addition, he coached many state champions as well as the Indoor and Outdoor New England Championship record holders in the boy’s shot put.
Since returning to UMaine, Coach Woodbury has guided the Black Bear throwers to multiple Top 10 performances and school records, All-New England selections and champions, and All-America East selections and champions. He is also currently a graduate student working toward a master’s in Kinesiology and Physical Education with a concentration in Exercise Science.
