Spencer Carey enters his fifth season with the Black Bears in 2026 where he will serve as the special teams coordinator and safeties coach. Carey has been the special teams coordinator for the past three seasons, along with spending two years with the cornerbacks (24-25) and two seasons with the outside linebackers (22-23), along with serving as the recruiting coordinator in 2024.

In 2025, Carey helped develop Samuel Tremblay into one of the most accurate kickers in the FCS, which had him named a finalist for the Fred Mitchell Award. Tremblay connected on 90% of his field goals on the season and 35-for-36 of his extra points. The Black Bears also averaged 40.5 yards per punt, including 15 inside of the 20-yard line. In the return game, Scott Woods has named to the All-CAA Second Team as a punt returner and Trevin Ewing set a new all-time program record in kickoff return yards in a career (2,455) after spending three seasons with Carey on the special teams.

Carey worked to assist in developing Maine’s top two tacklers in Brian Lee Jr. and Adrian Otero (72) in 2023 as part of the linebacker unit.

Carey, who spent five seasons as a student-athlete with the Maine Football team, joined the Black Bears after spending the 2021 season as a defensive quality control coach at Harvard. Prior to his time with the Crimson, Carey served from June 2019 through May of 2021 as the defensive backs coach and video coordinator at Bates College. Carey began his coaching career at Maine Maritime Academy where he helped mentor and develop one all-conference selection and the NEWMAC co-rookie of the year at outside linebacker.

Carey, a member of Maine's 2013 Colonial Athletic Association championship team, played three years at safety, a year at wide receiver, and one season at outside linebacker with the Black Bears while also serving as a four-year starter on four core special teams' units.
