ORONO, Maine -- Blanca Millan Modia knew she needed to play college basketball in the United States to prepare herself for a professional career in Europe. But she wasn't overly excited about the prospect.
"I'm a homebody," said Millan, a native of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. "I love my family and I love to have them close."
Millan received offers from higher-profile American programs, but the supportive atmosphere she experienced at the University of Maine during her recruiting visit won her over.
"When I saw the culture at Maine and how people up there were and how they treated me and embraced me, it made it so much easier," Millan said.
The versatile 6-foot-1 guard was right at home in Orono. She earned three All-America East first-team honors and led the Black Bears to two league titles and two NCAA Tournaments.
Millan became the first player in conference history to be twice named both the Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year (2019, 2021), putting her on the fast track to induction into the UMaine Sports Hall of Fame.
"Blanca was a really fierce competitor and just a winner in everything that she did," said head coach Amy Vachon.
"I think we were the perfect fit for each other," Vachon said. "Blanca probably could have gone somewhere bigger and she didn't."
Millan cracked the lineup as a freshman, earning All-Rookie accolades during 2016-17. That first season concluded with the transfer of five teammates, including two Spaniards, and the coaching changeover from Richard Barron to Vachon.
"She committed to Maine and she stayed here through a lot of transitions and we will always appreciate her for that," Vachon said.
Millan set the tone with her defense, usually guarding the opponent's best player. She thrived with tremendous anticipation, quick hands and an aggressive style of play.
"I always took a lot of pride in being a good defender," she said.
Millan earned three America East All-Defensive honors, leading the league in steals three times. She ranks fourth all time at UMaine with 324 steals, 10 shy of Cindy Blodgett's career mark.
"Defensively, she was really deceptive," Vachon said. "She was so long and she could get steals and would do things that people weren't really ready for."
Millan finished her UMaine career with 1,974 points, good for seventh in program history and 10th in America East. Millan is fourth all time in minutes played for the Black Bears.
As a senior, coming off reconstructive knee surgery that forced her to miss most of 2019-20, Millan had her best season at UMaine.
"It was definitely a year where I learned and grew so much because I saw so many things from outside that I would never see from the inside," she said of her redshirt campaign.
Playing alongside classmate Fanny Wadling, Millan ranked 15th in the nation, averaging 21.4 points and 2.9 steals, and was named the NCAA International Player of the Year by World Exposure Report. She was a finalist for the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award.
"I had the rapport with the coaching staff and my teammates, but also our fan base was amazing," said Millan, who graduated in 2021 at UMaine's Outstanding International Student in the College of Education and Human Development.
Her career highlights included America East titles in 2019 and 2021, but she fondly remembers a 2018 game against Albany at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
Even with Millan fouling out with 5:45 left, UMaine erased a 16-point second-half deficit and won the league regular-season title with an overtime victory.
"It was an amazing game," Millan said. "I had to watch it [the end] from the bench, but I couldn't sit down and it was probably one of my top three most fun games ever."
Millan, 28, is preparing for her sixth season in the Liga Feminina Indesa, Spain's top professional league. She has career averages of 10.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals.
"She's playing with some WNBA players in that league and she's one of their best," Vachon said. "She's continued to flourish."
This year, Millan will compete for Azul Marino Palma de Mallorca, her fourth pro team. Last season, she averaged 9.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.2 steals playing for Baxi Ferrol.
"Here, I don't have to score as much," Millan said. "Defense is about the same. It's just my role has been a little different."
Millan credits her family — dad Carlos, who also played professionally, along with mom Silvia and older sister Silvia — with providing unwavering support during her basketball journey.
"They are the reason why I play basketball," Millan said. "I love them to death and I'm so happy that they can actually see my professional journey."
