ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine student-athletes posted impressive marks for the fall semester as 16 of the 17 varsity programs achieved cumulative team grade point averages of 3.0 or better for the 2024 fall term, 10 of which posted marks of 3.50 or greater. The Black Bears achieved a department cumulative GPA of 3.45 for the fall term, which is the highest fall department GPA on record.
The student-athletes average GPA for the term of 3.45 bested the mark of 3.24 for all University full-time degree seeking undergraduates and the 3.19 mark for all undergraduates.
The men's cross country team led all programs with a department high 3.73 GPA for the term, followed by a three-way tie of 3.72 GPAs for women's basketball, women's cross country, and the 2024 America East champion women's soccer program.
Additionally, field hockey (3.71), women's swimming & diving (3.62), women's indoor track & field (3.66), women's outdoor track & field (3.66), softball (3.64), and men's ice hockey (3.59), each bested 3.50 for the term.
Nine programs achieved their highest fall semester GPA, or tied it, since 1988. Those teams were field hockey, women's swimming & diving, women's indoor track & field (tied), women's outdoor track & field (tied), baseball, men's cross country, football, men's indoor track & field, and men's outdoor track & field.
Additionally, 78 individual student-athletes achieved perfect 4.00 GPAs for the fall term.
