Orono, Maine -- The University of Maine student-athletes posted impressive marks for the fall semester as 16 of the 17 varsity programs achieved cumulative team grade point averages of 3.0 or better for the 2023 fall term, 10 of which posting marks of 3.50 or greater. The Black Bears achieved a department cumulative GPA of 3.35 for the fall term.
The women's basketball team led all programs with a department high 3.88 GPA for the term, followed by women's cross country at 3.80 and the softball team (3.70). Along with winning the 2023 America East Championship, the women's soccer team posted a 3.63 GPA. The men's ice hockey team achieved the highest mark of any men's program with a 3.71 mark. Additionally, field hockey (3.65), women's ice hockey (3.56), women's swimming & diving (3.58), women's indoor track & field (3.66), and women's outdoor track & field (3.66), each bested 3.50 for the term.
Ten programs achieved their highest fall semester GPA, or tied it, since 1988. Those teams women's basketball, women's cross country, women's ice hockey, softball, women's swimming & diving, women's indoor track & field, women's outdoor track & field, men's ice hockey, men's indoor track & field (tied), and men's outdoor track & field (tied).
Additionally, 68 individual student-athletes achieved perfect 4.00 GPAs for the fall term.
