Smith registers 15th double-double in win over Binghamton

Black Bears lock up the No. 3 seed, will host Binghamton in America East quarterfinal

Box Score Orono, Maine -- For the fourth time this season, Adrianna Smith posted a 30 point effort with 31 points and a career-high 19 rebounds for her 15th double-double of the season as Maine earned a 69-65 victory over Binghamton on Senior Day in Orono.

With the win, Maine secured the number three seed in the upcoming America East playoffs and will host Binghamton on Wednesday, March 1 at 7 p.m. 

Smith, who finished the day 11-of-20 from the floor and 9-of-11 from the free throw line, posted her 11th double-double in her last 17 outings while finishing with double-figure scoring for the 19th consecutive game. Anne Simon added 18 points and five assists in the victory while Olivia Roockwood chipped in a trio of triples for nine points off the bench. 

Maine, which controlled the boards by a 41-34 margin, assisted on 15 of its 24 makes while shooting 43.6 percent from the floor and hitting 15-of-21 (71.4) from the free throw strip.e

The Black Bears, who never trailed in the contest, used a hot shooting third quarter to help seal the deal. Maine finished the third period 11-of-14 including hitting all three triples it took.

Maine raced out to a 7-0 lead as it held Binghamton scoreless over the game's opening 6:19 of action.

The Bearcats responded, answering Maine's hot start with a 6-0 run to cut the lead to one. Smith closed out the first quarter with two free throws, giving her 10 points in the opening 10 minutes, to help Maine to a 16-12 lead after one.

Maine was able to build its largest lead of the first half thanks to an 8-2 run to open the second quarter. After Binghamton cut the lead back to a pair, Simon dialed in a triple off a feed from Smith. Rockwood followed two Binghamton free throws with a three of her own before Simon, working off a steal, raced down court for a pair to extend Maine's lead out to eight, 24-16.

Binghamton once again answered, this time with an 11-3 run to tie the game at 27-27. 

Maine would take a two point cushion into the half as Smith registered 13 points and 11 rebounds over the game's opening 20 minutes.

The Black Bears, leading by five early in the third, snatched their first double-digit lead of the game with 7:40 left in the third. Smith tallied the hoop and the harm, converting the free throw, before Bornemann's fast break bucket extended Maine's advantage out to 39-29.

Maine built its largest lead of the game, 51-39, on Smith's bucket with 2:35 left in the third.

Binghamton began to cut into Maine's lead, answering Maine's sprint with an 8-0 run late in the period.

The Bearcats tied the game for the second time, forcing a 59-59 split, with 3:02 remaining in regulation.

Maine pulled down three consecutive offensive rebounds on the ensuing possession before eventually making Binghamton pay when Bornemann's triple broke the tie with 1:54 on the clock. Two free throws from Smith followed as Maine's lead reached five with less than a minute remaining.

The Black Bears sealed the deal from the free throw line down the stretch, going 8-of-8 in clutch moments to seal a 69-65 victory in the regular season finale.
