
Three Black Bears register double-figures in season opener at Quinnipiac

Hamden, Conn. – Anne Simon posted a team-high 11 points to lead three Black Bears in double-figures in Maine's season opening 70-57 loss at Quinnipiac on Monday evening.
Simon, who added six rebounds in the contest, was joined in double-digits by Adrianna Smith and Sarah Talon who each registered 10 points. Smith posted her 21st consecutive double-digit scoring performance while narrowly missing a double-double with nine rebounds while Talon finished 4-of-9 from the field after earning the start.
Sera Hodgson added nine points on three triples.
Maine led by seven, 19-12, after one quarter but was outscored 42-22 over the second and third periods.
The Black Bears controlled the boards by a 38-28 margin while shooting 35.8-percent (24-67) from the floor.
Trailing by a pair late in the opening quarter, Maine completed the first stanza on a 9-0 run aided by Hodgson's triple at the buzzer. The run gave Maine its largest lead of the game, 19-12, after one.
Quinnipiac opened the second quarter with a 10-2 spring to regain a one-point edge, 22-21.
Maine responded with a 5-0 run to regain the lead, 25-22, before Quinnipiac answered with a 5-0 sprint of its own to go up by a pair. The Bobcats would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.
Quinnipiac opened the second half by outscoring Maine 21-10 in the third quarter.
The Black Bears were unable to chip into the deficit in the fourth, ultimately falling in the end by a final of 70-57.
Maine returns to action on Thursday when it travels to take on La Salle at 4:30 p.m.
