Smith's double-double leads Maine to win in back and forth battle

Smith registers first career double-double in victory
Orono, Maine -- Adrianna Smith's first career double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds guided Maine to a 61-59 victory over Northeastern in a game which featured 13 lead changes and seven ties.
Smith, who posted career-highs in both points and rebounds in the win, finished the night 9-of-13 from the floor with three assists and eight of her 12 rebounds coming on the offensive end. Freshman Jaycie Christopher added a career-high nine points off the bench while fellow freshman Sarah Talon pitched in a career-best eight points in her 24 minutes off the pine.
Maine dominated the boards, outrebounding Northeastern 34-23, while shooting 51 percent from the floor with a 50 percent showing (7-of-14) from three point range.
Neither team led by more than three points in the opening quarter which featured 10 lead changes and a tie.
Christopher's triple at the horn to end the first began a 5-0 run for Maine as the hosts took a 19-14 lead with 8:51 left in the half.
Northeastern fought back to take a one point edge but Maine would end the half strong, piecing together a 7-1 run, with Caroline Bornemann's triple propelling Maine to a 28-24 lead.
Maine took a 28-26 edge into the break.
The Huskies began the second half on a 5-2 to take a two point advantage before growing the lead to four.
The Black Bears ended the third quarter on a charge, putting together a 10-0 run to take a lead they would never give back.
Two Talon free throws began the run before Smith cashed in on a second change bucket. Olivia Rockwood's driving layup built the lead to five before Smith's bucket in the paint gave Maine its largest lead of the night, 50-43, with three seconds left in the third quarter.
Northeastern battled back, tying the game at 57-57 with 3:14 on the clock. Maine broke the tie as it was Smith leading the charge, taking a feed from Bornemann for two.
The Huskies tied it again but Smith once again took charge, pulling down an offensive board and drawing a foul. The sophomore hit both free throws, giving Maine a 61-59 advantage with 1:25 left.
Northeastern had three chances to tie or take the lead but would go 0-for-3 down the stretch as Maine moved to 2-2 with the 61-59 victory.
The Black Bears are back in action when they travel to St. Mary's University in Moraga, Cal. to take on Kansas on Friday, Nov. 25 at 3 p.m. ET.
