Maine pours in a season-high 15 triples, tally 27 assists

Bangor, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team knocked down 15 threes, one shy of matching the school record, while assisting on 27 of 29 field goals to earn a 77-51 victory over New Hampshire in the Border Battle, presented by Buffalo Wild Wings.

Maine's season-high 15 triples included a six makes from Anne Simon who finished with a game-high 22 points and five rebounds. Caroline Bornemann added 16 points with four triples while Alba Orois tied a school-record with a career-high 14 assists. Orois now shares the record with Dor Saar (2019-20) and Julia Treadwell (1983-84). Olivia Rockwood (9) and Paula Gallego (8) each finished with career-high point totals.

The Black Bears featured an impressively, efficient offense as their 27 assists were their highest helper total since Dec. 4, 2019. Maine went 10-of-11 from the floor in the third quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 29-16 in the period, while finishing the game at 62.5 percent from three point range. The shooting performance from beyond the arc marked the first time Maine has bested 60 percent from downtown since Nov. 22, 2015 against North Dakota State.

After an evenly matched first quarter, the Black Bears were able to build some distance late in the second, closing out the first half on a 5-0 run as Simon's fourth triple of the half and a bucket from Adrianna Smith put Maine up 28-22 at the break.

Maine came out of the half on fire in the third. The Black Bears would go 5-for-5 from three in the period, including a perfect 4-for-4 showing from downtown in the period by Bornemann.

After pushing the lead to 10, the Black Bears closed out the quarter on a 15-6 run. Four-straight from Maeve Carroll gave Maine a 49-34 edge before Bornemann's triple pushed the advantage out to 18. After a New Hampshire bucket, Bornemann knocked down her second consecutive three as Maine would enter the fourth quarter leading 57-38.

Maine's offense continued its rapid pace in the fourth, opening with a 10-3 run. Simons triple ran the lead to 24 before Carroll, working off a turnover, knocked down a layup to put Maine on top, 67-41.

The Black Bears would build their largest lead with 1:52 to play on a 5-0 run as Wilborn hit Maine's 15th three of the night before Lexi Mittelstadt's backdoor layup expanded the deficit to 28.

Maine would cruise the rest of the way, securing the 77-51 victory in its sixth-straight victory at home over the Wildcats.

The Black Bears continue America East action on Sunday when they travel to meet Binghamton at 2 p.m.
