Men's Ice Hockey Drops First Game of 2021-22

OMAHA, Nebraska -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated by the University of Nebraska at Omaha, 4-1, on Friday evening in the Baxter Arena.
The Black Bears and Mavericks battled to a scoreless first period. Omaha appeared to have taken an early lead, but the goal was waved off after Coach Ben Barr challenged offsides on the play. The new head coach was correct and finished his first career period with no score on the board.
First Goal (1-0 UNO): After Isaiah Saville turned away a Nolan Renwick wrister, the Mavericks attacked the Black Bears' end. Kirby Proctor collected the rebound and fired the puck ahead to a streaking Cameron Berg. Alone in front of the Maine defense, the freshman did the rest. Early in the second frame, Omaha held a 1-0 lead.
Second Goal (1-1): Nine minutes after Omaha took the lead, Maine tied the non-conference contest at one goal apiece. Jakub Sirota dished the puck to Adam Dawe. The senior found an unmarked Ben Poisson in front of the Maverick's net. Poisson found some space and got the Black Bears on the board. After two periods, the game remained tied.
Third Goal (2-1 UNO): On their fifth power play opportunity of the evening, the Mavericks scored the go ahead and game winning goal. Taylor Ward found the back of the net early into the man advantage. Eight minutes into the third period, Maine trailed by a goal.
Fourth Goal (3-1 UNO): As Maine left the penalty box, Omaha scored their second goal of the third period. Jack Randl stuffed the puck home past Victor Ostman.
Fifth Goal (4-1 UNO): Omaha added an empty net goal with 1:58 left in the contest. The third goal lead would stand as Maine dropped its first game of the 2021-22 season.
Notes: Nolan Renwick, Grant Hebert, Keenan Suthers, David Breazeale, and Dom Dockery all made their Black Bear debuts tonight against the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Ben Poisson scored his eighth career goal. Adam Dawe dished out assist number 27, while Jakub Sirota assisted on a goal for the 23rd time in his career.
Victor Ostman stopped 24 shots for the Black Bears, while Isaiah Saville tallied 22 saves for UNO.
Maine went 0 for 4 on their power play opportunities, as the Mavericks were 1-7 on its player advantages.
The Black Bears blocked 14 shots and won 33 face-offs as a team.
