Men's Hockey Drops First Hockey East Game of 2021-22

BOSTON -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated by the #20 Northeastern University Huskies, 5-0, on Friday evening in Matthews Arena.

First Goal (1-0 #20 Northeastern): Jack Hughes, the youngest player in NCAA Division 1 hockey, broke the scoreless tie seven minutes into the first period. Riley Hughes found his brother, who did the rest. Maine trailed by a goal very early into the Hockey East opener.

Second Goal (2-0 #20 Northeastern): With traffic in front of Matthew Thiessen, Jordan Harris scored his first goal of the season and his squad's second goal of the evening. The defenseman fired a shot that found its way through a group of bodies. Halfway through the second period, Maine trailed 2-0.

Third Goal (3-0 #20 Northeastern): Less than three minutes after the Harris goal, Matt Demelis found the back of the net on an odd man rush for the Huskies. Joined by Jordan Harris on the breakaway, Demelis gave Northeastern a three-goal advantage.

Fourth Goal (4-0 #20 Northeastern): Riley Hughes scored a short-handed goal in the opening minutes of the final frame. The Huskies built its lead to four goals with 15 minutes left in the contest.

Fifth Goal (5-0 #20 Northeastern): Sam Colangelo scored exactly one minute after Hughes. With 14:22 left in regulation, Maine trailed by five. The 5-0 lead stood as the Huskies knocked off the Black Bears in game number one of the weekend series.
