Blanca Millan's game-high 27 points helped guide Maine to its fifth-straight win as the Black Bears completed the weekend sweep at UAlbany, 63-47. The win, Maine's eighth in a row against the Great Danes, moved Maine to 10-1 on the season and 7-1 in America East play.
Dor Saar knocked down a trio of three-pointers in the win, including the 220th of her career to break Cindy Blodgett's program record for three-point field goals made. Saar, who finished with nine points and five assists, stands just two points shy of 1,000 for her career. Millan added six rebounds and three steals to her impressive stat line as she has now scored in double-figures in all 11 of Maine's games this season.
The Black Bears, who never trailed in the contest, finished 10-of-22 from downtown and 26-of-55 overall from the floor. Defensively Maine forced 19 turnovers with 10 steals and, for the fourth time this season, held its opponent under 50 points.
A day after going 4-for-17 from 3-point range, the Black Bears came out on fire from beyond the arc. Four triples in the opening 4:05, including a pair from Saar, helped Maine to a 12-6 edge.
Maine gave itself a healthy cushion with a 24-11 advantage in the second quarter, aided by a 10-0 run and 14 points from Millan. Millan's triple, followed by a traditional three-point play, completed the run as the Black Bears' lead stretched to 26-15 with 6:59 to play in the half.
Maine ended the second quarter riding a 10-2 run to take a 40-24 lead into the halftime break.
UAlbany closed the gap in the third, outscoring the Black Bears 17-8 in the quarter. Maine, which was held to just two points in the first 8:36 of the period, saw its lead dwindle to just six after UAlbany put together a 12-2 run.
The Great Danes kept charging, trimming the lead to 48-44 with 7:14 remaining. However, Millan and the Black Bears would lock in to put the game away.
With Maine leading by four, a bucket from Millan jump started a 10-0 run by the Black Bears. Back-to-back triples from Fogarty and Simon extended Maine's lead back out to 14 with 3:17 to play.
Overall, Maine was able to close out the Great Danes with a 15-3 run to lock up the weekend sweep, 63-47.
The Black Bears continue America East play when they travel to Binghamton for a two-game set on Jan. 23-24 with both games scheduled for 2 p.m.
