ORONO, Maine -- The COVID-19 pandemic caused for much adversity and challenges for UMaine's student-athletes. The academic impact of the pandemic forced the Black Bears out of in-person classes as students were challenged with adjusting to virtual learning. Through it all, UMaine's student-athletes remained focused and exceeded expectations, resulting in one of the most impressive academic semesters in recent history. In total, the Black Bears posted an incredible 3.53 GPA for the spring term.
For the first time in history, all 17 varsity programs achieved a 3.0 or higher GPA for the spring term. Women's Basketball set the tone, leading the way with a highly impressive 3.85 GPA. Football recorded its highest GPA in history, besting the 3.0 mark for the first time while Men's Basketball boasted a 3.55 average, marking just the second time in history in which it has tallied a mark better than 3.0. Twelve of Maine's 17 varsity programs earned a 3.5 or better average for the spring semester.
